The login page remembers him. That is somehow the worst part. It fills in his email automatically, cheerfully, as though nothing has happened.
Welcome back. You have 8 modules remaining.
Eight. He did three. Module one was on a run of nights he still remembers as one of the better fortnights of his adult life, sitting at that table after everybody was in bed with a cup of tea going cold and a pen, because he is the sort of man who prints things out. Module two took longer. Module three he finished in a car park on his phone, in fifteen minute pieces, over about six weeks.
And then February.
There is no dramatic thing in February. His hours went up. His daughter started having a hard time at school in a way that took every evening for a while and is not really over. His father in law needed collecting twice a week. All of that is still true, which is the point, and is why he cannot make himself click into module four and also cannot make himself click the button that says leave the course.
So the page sits open on the laptop, most Sundays, for about ten minutes, and then he closes it.
The sentence, when it comes, is not I am too busy. He knows he is busy. The sentence is: if I were really called, I would have found the hours.
You know that sentence. It might be a course, or a language, or a training you were sure God put in front of you. There is a login somewhere, or a folder, or a book with a receipt in it at page sixty, and it has quietly become an argument about whether you were ever serious.
Who does the confirming
Paul writes to a church that is, by any honest measure, a mess. Divided, immature, embarrassing in public. And in the first paragraph, before he corrects a single thing, he says this about them.
Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.1 Corinthians 1:8
He shall confirm you. Not: you shall confirm yourself by finishing what you started. Not: your consistency shall confirm you. The confirming is done by Christ, all the way to the end, over a congregation that could not keep a single arrangement in order.
You are being confirmed to the end by Christ Himself, and that confirming has not paused since February. That is what the written word says over you and not a generous framing I am offering a tired man on a Sunday, and the Holy Spirit who was with you at that table with the cold tea is the evidence that none of it was ever being proved by a completion percentage.
Watch what that does to the reckoning you do every Sunday for ten minutes. If the confirming is His, then a dormant login is information about a shift pattern, a daughter having a hard time and a father in law who needs collecting. It is not information about your calling, and it never had the standing to become that.
The hours were never the test
Here is the second thing, and it takes the weight off rather than adding any.
The sentence you carry has a hidden assumption in it, and the assumption is that God tests the reality of a calling by seeing whether a man can generate hours out of a week that does not have them. That is not a doctrine you would preach at anybody else. You would be appalled to hear somebody say it to a young father with a daughter struggling at school.
You have been under the hand of God through every one of those months, and the confirming did not slow because eight modules stayed at eight. Scripture says He works all things after the counsel of His own will, and it is the Holy Spirit doing that work in you rather than checking a dashboard to see whether you have logged in.
There is something worth saying plainly, because this is exactly where a message like this could turn into a nudge and it will not. Nothing here is telling you to open module four tonight. Nothing here is telling you to finish the course this year, or ever. If you click the button that says leave the course and never study another thing you have not stepped one inch outside the work of God, because that work is a man and it does not get graded.
This is where your mouth comes into it, because I am not leaving you with a comforting thought to close along with the tab. Jesus taught that the smallest living faith a person has, spoken out loud at the thing in the way, is enough for God to work with. Spoken. Not turned over silently at a kitchen table on a Sunday. And the thing in the way is not your hours and it is certainly not your daughter. It is a sentence: if I were really called, I would have found the hours. Nobody has ever answered that out loud, and you least of all.
You have real authority to answer it, and it is yours because you are in Christ, not because you feel like a man with any authority looking at a login page. Scripture gives the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words, and the power was never in how convinced you sounded saying them.
If this has taken you somewhere darker than tiredness, and there are hours when you would rather not be here at all, tell a living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line, 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number where you live. That is not a detour from what God is doing with your life. Very often it is exactly what He is doing, arriving down a telephone.
So. The kitchen table, the laptop, and eight modules remaining.
Lift both hands off the keyboard and turn them over. Actually do it, palms up, in front of a page that has been arguing with you since February. Your hands are the thing that has not been able to click either button, and they are going to do something else for a minute.
Say out loud the thing that stopped. Plain words, the flattest ones you own. Not the version you give people at church who ask how the course is going.
Then say one sentence naming who confirms to the end. Not what you are going to do about module four, because nothing here is asking you to do anything about module four, and God has never required a completed course in order to confirm a man. Just who confirms. One sentence, then close the laptop.
You are not a man who was never really called, you are a man Christ Himself is confirming to the end, and that confirming has been running at full strength through every unstudied month since February. That is the word's account of this year rather than my generous reading of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been doing the work in you.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these out loud with your hands still open. You stand in Christ, and Scripture is what makes these words a declaration rather than a wish, and the Holy Spirit carries them rather than however much energy is left on a Sunday. What God does next with your life, and whether module four is ever opened, is His to decide, and He is not asking you for a study plan tonight.
- Dormant login, you are not the proof of what I am. Paul says Christ shall confirm you to the end, and you are a page that remembers my email, and He is a confirmer.
- Test that says a real calling would have found the hours, you have no place in my mouth, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. Scripture never made a calling depend on generating hours out of a week that did not have them, and I would not say that sentence to any other man.
- Lord, You confirm me to the end and I am inside that confirming tonight with my hands off the keys. I thank You, because Your Spirit has been working in me through every month I did not study, and I am closing this laptop without a verdict.
