He put nineteen chairs out. He knows it was nineteen because he counted them going out and he is counting them going back, and both times the number has felt like a public statement about him.
It is a hired room above a shop. Forty pounds. He booked six weeks and he is three weeks in, and three weeks in he has met a total of one person, and that person came the first week, stayed forty minutes, was extremely kind about it, and has not come back.
The sign is the part that gets him. He printed it himself on card at work, and he laminated it, because laminating it felt like believing in it. It is folded in his bag now with the corner bent, and he will bring it again next week because he paid for six.
Nobody was cruel. That is the thing. There is no villain. He put it on three noticeboards and a local group online and eleven people said it sounded great, and he was so glad, and then the Tuesdays came, one after another, and the room stayed exactly as full as it was at ten to seven.
He stacks the chairs. Nineteen. And the sentence arrives at about number fourteen, in his own voice, which is the only voice that ever gets through: if God were in this, somebody would have come.
You know that sentence. Maybe it was a class, or a prayer meeting, or a business, or an invitation you extended three times. Somewhere you did the thing you believed you were meant to do, and the room stayed empty, and you have quietly been reading the emptiness as a message from heaven about you.
An empty room measured attendance, not God
Two things went into that stack of chairs tonight, and they have been welded together in you since about week two. I want to get a blade between them before anything else, because until they come apart nothing here can reach you.
The meeting stopped. Nobody came. That is a plain fact, three times over, and I will not tell you the one who came was secretly a hundred or that numbers do not matter to you. They mattered. You counted them.
The purpose of God did not stop, and it was never the same object as the meeting. That is the whole message and I am putting it up front rather than making you wait for it. What cannot be stopped is His purpose. Not your turnout, not your sign, not your ability to get people into a room above a shop on a Tuesday.
But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.Acts 5:39
Gamaliel says that to a council that is trying to work out how to stop something, and notice the exact claim: a thing that is of God cannot be overthrown by the strongest people in the room. Now turn that around and hold it where you are standing. If a work of God cannot be overthrown by a council with real power, it certainly cannot be overthrown by eighteen empty chairs and a laminated sign.
You are inside a purpose that has not been overthrown by anything, standing in a hired room at half past eight with a chair in each hand, and none of the three Tuesdays touched it. That is what the written word says and not a nice thing I thought of to soften an empty evening, and the Holy Spirit who moved on you to book that room in the first place is the evidence that this never depended on the door count.
Watch what that does to the arithmetic you have been running while stacking. If the thing that keeps moving is His, then an empty room is information about a Tuesday, a noticeboard and a town. It is not information about your standing with God, and it never had the authority to become that.
Nobody appointed you to produce results
Here is the second thing, and it takes weight off rather than putting any on.
Somewhere between the laminating and the third Tuesday you started believing that a purpose of God arrives with a receipt, and that if you cannot show the receipt then either the purpose was not real or you are not. So the empty room has not simply been a disappointment. It has been evidence in a trial you are conducting against yourself.
You have been carried through all three of those Tuesdays, and the carrying was never a payment for filling the room. Scripture says He works all things after the counsel of His own will, and it is the Holy Spirit doing that working through you rather than tallying attendance and deciding whether to stay involved.
There is something worth saying very plainly here, because this is exactly where a message like this could turn into a push and it is not going to. Nothing here is telling you to keep going for the last three weeks. Nothing here is telling you to try a different night, or a better sign, or a bigger group online. If you cancel the remaining weeks tomorrow you have not stepped one inch outside the purpose of God, because getting inside it was never something you achieved by gathering anybody and staying inside it is not something you maintain by numbers.
And this is where your mouth comes into it, because I am not leaving you with a comforting thought to fold up with the sign. Jesus taught that the smallest living faith a person has, spoken out loud at the thing in the way, is enough for God to work with. Spoken. Not carried down the stairs in silence. And the thing in the way is not the town and it is not the eleven people who said it sounded great. It is a sentence: if God were in this, somebody would have come. That sentence has been running your inner life for three weeks with nobody answering it, and you least of all.
You have real authority to answer it, and it is yours because you are in Christ, not because you feel like a man with authority carrying a bag down a fire escape. Scripture gives you the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words, and the power was never in the confidence you could summon on the way to the car.
If the three Tuesdays have taken you somewhere darker than discouragement, and there are hours when you would rather not be here at all, tell a living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line, 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number where you live. That is not a detour from what God is doing with your life. Very often it is exactly what He is doing, arriving down a telephone.
So. The hired room, the stack, the bag with the folded sign in it.
Put both hands on the back of the top chair and then turn them over. Actually turn them, palms up, resting on the chair frame. There is nobody there to see it, which is exactly why you will do it.
Say out loud the thing that stopped. Plainly, in the flattest words you own. Not the cheerful version you gave the one person who came.
Then say one sentence naming who cannot be overthrown. Not what you are going to do about next Tuesday, because nothing here is asking you to decide anything about next Tuesday, and God has never required anybody to fill a room in order to stay inside His purpose. Just who cannot be overthrown. One sentence, then let the room be quiet.
You are not a man whose calling was tested and found wanting, you are a man inside a work that nineteen empty chairs have no power to overthrow. That is the word's account of your three Tuesdays rather than mine, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been in that room every week whether or not anybody else was.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these out loud with your hands still open. You stand in Christ, and Scripture is what makes these words a declaration rather than a wish, and the Holy Spirit carries them rather than whatever conviction is left at half past eight. What God does next with your life, and whether that room is ever full, is His to decide, and He is not asking you for a strategy tonight.
- Empty room, you do not get to speak for God about my life. Gamaliel said a work that is of God cannot be overthrown, and you are three Tuesdays above a shop, and He is a purpose.
- Verdict that reads an empty room as heaven's answer, you have no place in my mouth, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. The word says He works all things after the counsel of His own will, so my standing with God was never counted at a door.
- Lord, Your work cannot be overthrown and I am inside it tonight with my hands open on a stacked chair. I thank You, because Your Spirit was in this room on all three of those Tuesdays, and I am carrying the sign home instead of a verdict.
