Lifted AgainProverbs 24:16

A Tally On The Doorframe

This message is for a woman who keeps a private count of every time she has collapsed back into the same place, and has reached a number she will not say out loud to anyone

She keeps the number in her head, which is worse than keeping it on paper, because a piece of paper can be thrown away.

She is at nineteen.

Nineteen is not a random figure. It is the count of times she has come all the way back to the same place, the specific place, the one that everybody in her life has a slightly different name for and that she does not name at all any more. She does not count the small slips. She has rules about what qualifies, which she has never told anybody, because saying the rules out loud would mean saying the number out loud.

At about seven she stopped telling people when it happened. At about eleven she started, when asked how she was doing, giving an answer that was true in the technical sense and untrue in every other way.

Tonight she is standing in her own kitchen with a glass of water she does not want, and she has just added one. Twenty. And the adding took about a second and it was not dramatic, it was almost administrative, and that is the part that has finally frightened her.

Because here is what a number does over time: it stops being a record and becomes a description. Nineteen was a thing that had happened to her. Twenty feels like a thing she is.

You have a number. It might be attempts, or relapses, or arguments you swore were the last one, or mornings you promised yourself something at six and broke it by nine. You may not have said it out loud in years. You know exactly what it is.

The one verse with a number in it

There is exactly one verse people quote at somebody in your position, and it has a number in it, and the number is not doing what you think.

For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.Proverbs 24:16

Almost everybody reads that as encouragement to keep getting back up, which turns it into a demand and hands you a bigger version of the thing already crushing you. Read it again. It is not an instruction. It is a description of who somebody is. The just man is not the man who has a low number. He is the man who is characterized by rising, and the proverb sets him against a person who is characterized by something else entirely.

The number seven in Hebrew writing is not a tally. It is fullness, completeness, as many as there are. The proverb is not saying six is fine and eight is too many. It is saying: however full the falling is, the rising is the thing that describes this person.

You are described in Scripture as one who rises, and that description was never issued on the strength of a low number. That is what the written word says over you and not a generous reading I have gone looking for, and the Holy Spirit who is in you tonight in that kitchen is the evidence that the rising has never been your own manufacture.

Watch what that does to the arithmetic. If the rising is what characterizes you, then twenty is information about how long a hard thing has been going on. It is not information about what kind of woman you are, and it never had the standing to become that.

The counting was never yours to do

Here is the second thing, and this is where the weight actually comes off.

Somewhere around number seven you appointed yourself the record keeper of your own life. Nobody asked you to. There is no verse anywhere that instructs anybody to maintain a tally, and there is no scene in the gospels where Jesus asks anybody how many times. Not one. He asks Peter to forgive seventy times seven, which is precisely the same Hebrew way of saying stop counting, and He says it to the man doing the counting.

You have been carried through every one of the twenty, and the carrying did not become more reluctant at fourteen or seventeen or tonight. Scripture says He works all things after the counsel of His own will, and it is the Holy Spirit doing that work in you rather than sitting somewhere with a clipboard.

There is something worth saying plainly, because this is exactly where a message like this could turn into a push and it will not. Nothing here is telling you to make tomorrow different. Nothing here is asking you for a commitment, a promise, or a fresh start with a date attached. You have made those before and the making of them is part of what has been hurting you.

And say this too: whatever the specific thing is, the people who help with it, professionally, are worth telling the truth to. Going back to them is not a spiritual failure. It is very often what God is doing.

This is where your mouth comes into it, because I am not leaving you with a kind thought and a glass of water. Jesus taught that the smallest living faith a person has, spoken out loud at the thing in the way, is enough for God to work with. Out loud. Not counted silently for years. And the thing in the way is not the specific place you keep coming back to. It is a number, and the belief that it describes you. Nobody has ever answered that out loud, and you least of all.

You have real authority to answer it, and it is yours because you are in Christ, not because you feel like a woman with any authority standing at a sink at midnight. Scripture gives you the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words, and the power was never in how much you meant them.

If this has taken you somewhere darker than shame, and there are hours when you would rather not be here at all, tell a living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line, 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number where you live. That is not a detour from what God is doing with your life. Very often it is exactly what He is doing, arriving down a telephone.

The breakthrough

So. The kitchen, the glass of water, twenty.

Open both hands and turn them over. Actually do it, palms up, standing at the counter at whatever hour this is. Those hands have been keeping a ledger for years and they are going to hold nothing for a minute.

Say the thing out loud, once. Not the number. The thing. Plain words, the flattest ones you own, and only once, because saying it repeatedly is just counting in another form.

Then say one sentence naming who does the raising. Not what you are going to do about tomorrow, because nothing here is asking you for tomorrow, and God has never required a low number in order to call somebody His. Just who does the raising. One sentence, then let your hands drop.

You are not a woman who falls, you are a woman who is raised, and the raising has happened twenty times without one of them being your own achievement. That is the word's account of your life rather than my kind version of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been doing the raising every single time.

Declare this over yourself

Speak these out loud with your hands still open. You stand in Christ, and Scripture is what makes these words a declaration rather than a wish, and the Holy Spirit carries them rather than however you feel about tonight. What God does next with your life, and what tomorrow turns out to hold, is His to decide, and He is not asking you for a promise at this counter.

  1. Number I will not say out loud, you are not the sum of my life. Proverbs says a just man falls and rises again, and seven there means fullness and not a scoreboard, and you are a tally I appointed myself to keep.
  2. Belief that the count describes me, you have no place in my mouth, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. Scripture calls me one who rises, and it never issued that description on the strength of a low number.
  3. Lord, You do the raising and I am raised tonight standing at my own counter with empty hands. I thank You, because Your Spirit has lifted me twenty times and not one of them was my own doing, and I am putting the ledger down.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
