He does it before anybody is awake, which tells you most of what you need to know about how he feels about doing it.
Phone face down on the table. Kettle on so there is a noise in the room. Then the browser, then the saved page, then the number, then the wait while it thinks, and then the same screen.
Your application is being processed. There is currently no further update.
Third year.
The date in the corner of that page has not moved since a Tuesday in the second year. He has taken screenshots of it, which he is aware is not rational, and he has three of them, all identical, eleven months apart.
Nobody in the house asks any more. That happened gradually and it was a mercy when it started, because being asked every week was worse. It has since turned into its own kind of thing, where the largest fact in his life is the one nobody mentions at dinner.
He has done everything correctly. That is what he keeps coming back to. Every form, every date, every document certified twice because once was not enough. There is no error to find. There is nothing to appeal, because nothing has been decided.
The sentence arrives with the kettle. Not this is unjust. It is: nothing is moving, and there is nothing left for me to do about it.
You know that page. It might be an application, or a case, or a waiting list, or a process with a reference number and no human being attached to it. Something enormous in your life is sitting in a queue, and you have done everything, and the doing has run out, and the waiting has begun to feel like a verdict about your future.
Who goes first
There is a verse in Isaiah addressed to a man who did not worship the God speaking it, which is worth knowing before you read it, because it means the promise is not a reward for anybody's performance.
I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron.Isaiah 45:2
Two things in the shape of that sentence. First, He goes before. Not alongside, not behind, not after the options run out. His Spirit was ahead of you before the first form went in. Ahead, into the part you cannot see, which in your case is a queue with no visible position in it.
Second, the gates. Brass gates and iron bars are not obstacles a person negotiates with. They are the fixtures of a system. And the verb He uses is not open, it is break.
You are followed rather than led here, because God has gone ahead of you into a process you cannot see into. That is what the written word says over you and not a comforting image I have chosen for a man with a kettle, and the Holy Spirit who has been with you through three years of that page is the evidence that the going before did not begin when you ran out of things to do.
Watch what that does to the arithmetic before dawn. If He goes first, then a page that has not changed since a Tuesday in the second year is information about a queue and a caseload and a system with brass gates. It is not the boundary of your life, and it never had the standing to become that.
What this page will not tell you
Here is the second thing, and it is why the rest of it can be trusted.
Nothing here is going to tell you that your application will be granted. Nobody knows. Nothing here will name a month, or say that God is about to move, or tell you that the third year is always the last one. Those sentences get said to people in queues, warmly, and the ones for whom they did not come true were left carrying something heavier than a waiting time.
What is here does not depend on the outcome. God goes before into places you cannot see. Systems are not the outer limit of what He does. And nothing in a queue has ever been able to hold Him up.
You have been carried through every one of the three years, and the carrying did not slow when the date in the corner stopped moving. Scripture says He works all things after the counsel of His own will, and it is the Holy Spirit at work in this rather than waiting for a status to change.
There is something else this page will not do. It will not become a case against the officials, or the department, or the country. Some of that is deserved and holding it will cost you more than it costs them, and you have enough to carry before dawn.
This is where your mouth comes into it, because I am not leaving you with a warm thought and a kettle. Jesus taught that the smallest living faith a man has, spoken out loud at the thing in the way, is enough for God to work with. Spoken. Not refreshed silently for three years. And the thing in the way is not the department. It is a sentence: there is nothing left for me to do about it. Nobody has ever answered that out loud, and you least of all.
You have real authority to answer it, and it is yours because you are in Christ, not because you feel like a man with any authority holding a phone at five in the morning. Scripture hands you the standing and the Holy Spirit carries the words, and the power was never in how correctly you filled anything in.
If this has taken you somewhere darker than frustration, and there are mornings you would rather not be here at all, tell a living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line, 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number where you live. That is not a detour from what God is doing with your life. Very often it is exactly what He is doing, arriving down a telephone.
So. The table, the kettle, the page that says there is currently no further update.
Put the phone down and turn both hands over on the table. Actually do it, palms up, before it is light, with nobody awake to see it. Those hands have been refreshing a page for three years.
Say out loud the thing that has not moved. Plain words, the flattest ones in your language. Not the version you give the one relative who still asks.
Then say one sentence naming who goes before. Not what the decision will be, because nobody knows and nothing on this page will pretend, and God has never required a queue to move in order to be ahead of a man in it. Just who goes before. One sentence, then make the tea.
You are not a man with nothing left to do, you are a man being gone before by God into a process no screen of yours can see into. That is the word's account of these three years rather than my comfortable version of them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been with you at that table every morning.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these out loud with your hands still turned over. You stand in Christ, and Scripture is what makes these words a declaration rather than a wish, and the Holy Spirit carries them rather than whatever is left of you at five in the morning. What God does next, and what that page eventually says, is His to decide, and He has not promised you a decision and neither has this page.
- Page that has not changed, you are not the boundary of my life. Isaiah says I will go before you and break in pieces the gates of brass, and you are a line of text and a date from the second year.
- Sentence that says there is nothing left for me to do, you have no place in my mouth, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. Scripture has Him going ahead into the part I cannot see, so the end of my doing was never the end of the moving.
- Lord, You go before me and You break gates that are not mine to negotiate with, and I am standing on that this morning with my hands open on this table. I thank You, because Your Spirit has been here for all three years of this waiting, and I am making the tea instead of refreshing it again.
